Drawing fan art of my own characters (A behind-the-scenes confession)

The Hesitant Mediums and their respective gentlemen are now wearing costumes in my personal illustration archive, and I maintain this was a reasonable artistic decision.

I've been drawing seasonal coloring pages and art prints for Society of Kindred Spirits patrons — original pieces featuring the characters from the series. The Halloween piece put everyone in Bridgerton-adjacent finery. The winter piece gave each couple a shared scarf of alarming length. This is what happens when an author illustrates her own books and has strong feelings about her characters' winter wardrobes.

The manuscript for An Uncanny Bargain, the third Hesitant Mediums novel, is moving toward an editor slot. In the meantime, the Kindred Spirits on Patreon have been receiving:

  • Out-of-context quotes
  • Chapters as they arrive
  • Seasonal art prints for framing or coloring

The survey in February's Broadsheet asked a question I have been curious about for some time: which Jane Austen hero would you kiss, marry, or slap? Northanger Abbey's Catherine Morland would understand the impulse completely. The results, it turns out, are not flattering for Edmund Bertram.

If you want the behind-the-scenes version of the Hesitant Mediums — drafts, art, and the occasional Jane Austen opinion poll — Belinda's Broadsheet arrives monthly and is free at worderella.com/news.
