Guide to Book Publishing

Things to keep in mind about publishing. A series of reputable articles (there are about seven of them right now, and more coming in the future) that every writer should be familiar with.

I wrote my first short story in 10 years, only to realize after going through these edits and asking about it in an author group on Facebook that I wrote it from the wrong character perspective, which is why it feels flat. Back to the beginning it is...
I just wanted to share what my walk looked like this afternoon. Sometimes, being an introvert and a mom and a manager and an author and a person with too many ideas and not enough time means I need to just get outside and be alone for 30 minutes.
I'll be popping in and out of #authorlifemonth2021 because a lot is going on in real life. Aaaanyway, here is my writing fuel (other than reading as much as possible): my tea and coffee station. This has been an evolution over the last five years and I'm finally to a place where I looove it. I leveled up my loose leaf tea and coffee concoctions with this sampler set of le sirup de monin from my nearby @worldmarket. I didn't expect these syrups to have such an impact on my experience, but in this case, it really it the little things that bring joy.
You guys, I found a tutorial on the internet to turn a box into a phone boom for overhead videos and COULD NOT RESIST. Dual benefit is my husband now has a way to take videos of his Lego builds, haha. Anyway, this is what it looks like when I transfer Draft -1 from my notebook into the electronic word file. Once everything is pieced together, that file becomes Draft 0. Then come at least three more rounds of edits, usually through feedback and paid editors... Anyway, my brain is trying it's best to keep the short story and the novel separate, but it's tough to do when you have a backlog of writing sessions to transfer.
Very excited that the ebook for The Last April is now distributed widely, meaning you no longer need to have Kindle Unlimited to read it. Link in my profile! You can request your library to purchase a copy for reading in Overdrive or Libby, even! This is a double celebration because four years ago, I pressed "publish" for The Last April right around this time. I'm excited to get into more regular writing habits and can't wait to release the short story and novels I've been scribbling in my notebook. While The Last April is straight historical fiction, I'm jumping back into my historical fantasy worlds with ghosts and magic for future works. I mean, when you love Sailor Moon, Jane Austen, Doctor Who, Buffy, and Anne of Green Gables equally, what else can you expect?
New glasses, who dis? I say in my (newly updated) author bio that I love eyeglasses. Here are my latest pairs due to a prescription update. Usually I buy through Zenni Optical, but this time I tried @eyebuydirect because they donate a pair of glasses to a country of your choosing for each pair you buy. I chose South Africa. If you've never bought eyeglasses online, it's really not as scary as you might think. I've been doing this for 11 years and have never regretted it. All you need is your prescription, pupillary distance, and then know some measurements about the glasses you wear that fit. I've never done light frames before, and of course got my standard red. I'm digging it! What do you guys think? #EBDfamily
What is a favorite drink of yours? Forgive the terrible angle, but my rooibos tea made the most fascinating swirls when I poured some creamer. Things have been in transition at work so I haven't been able to keep up with my goal of writing three sentences a day because I feel so tapped out by the end of the work day. I have managed to muster energy for the more administrative side of things, like getting more details on my ko-fi supporter account, restarting my newsletter, and consolidate bookmarked distributor links into a Notion dashboard. That said, I'm currently brainstorming two series at once, something I've never done before. Challenge accepted!
Getting ready to ship another of my Bright Bird Press novel planner notebooks. I've made changes to my #etsy packaging... Black bags that fit the notebooks better, and these cute stickers randomized with each order. Lest I forget to say it, I am against white supremacy and stand with my AAPI friends. My new email newsletter (coming this Friday) highlights two notable AAPI women in honor of Women's History Month. If you're needing help with self-care these days, I'm using @theshineapp, which I also link to in my upcoming newsletter. If you're not subscribed, the link to my newsletter is in my profile. Stay kind, peeps.
For the first time in years, I finished a journal, end to end. This was gifted to me by @honihale back in 2017, I think? I started using it in 2019, and I literally ran out of space mid-sentence this morning and had to set up my new journal (in the @hunkeedori cover I mentioned earlier this week) so I could keep the flow going. I was worried my short story was going to end up a novel, I tend to do that 🤦🏾‍♀️But I pulled it together, and I think now it's a short story between novels, and I'm brainstorming a series title. I've never written a series, so this should be an adventure!
What are your journaling habits or traditions? I'm in the process of changing mine, and have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of this custom sewed travelers notebook from @hunkeedori to do so. I chose the composition size and the navy lattice fabric. I wanted something dark that would hide any accidental staining, and a pattern that would go with any notebooks I threw inside. The a5 notebook is my reference journal. The composition notebook is the scratch journal for first drafts and brainstorms. Since there are 4 slots, I could have two projects going at once! I've never done that before, but if you went to my ko-fi site after yesterday's update, you know I'm working on a novel and a short story that might become a teaser for a new novel/sequel to Haunting Miss Trentwood.
Once upon a time, I had a patreon. A patreon I disbanded because I couldn't keep up with the content schedule. Now, finally, I've set up a @kofi_button account so those interested can show their support through an online tip jar. Ko-fi makes it super easy to "buy a paragraph" one time or monthly. I'll post similar content to my instagram, but also snippets from works-in-progress, giving you the opportunity to provide feedback. If you've ever wanted to influence the direction of a story, this would be your chance! Monthly subscribers will receive advance copies of my short stories, ebooks, and audio books prior to official launch.
You guys, @hottopic is killing it lately with their Sailor Moon merchandise! I feel like maybe I should wear the Black Lady earrings while writing my fantasy in particular, haha
